A little less than 2 weeks ago I decided to get off the fence and get my instrument rating. That day I cracked the first book and today I passed the written! I've signed up with PIC to do the flying from 10-26 March. Looking ahead to this next step I thought some of you could give a few tips.

I vaguely remember a posting on the old site that had power settings and speeds to use for different legs of the approach...and maybe steep turns? Do any of you remember this? Can anyone post again or email me?

Michael, I have just finished most of my PIC course and due to sickness had to cancel my check ride. I am taking my check ride this Friday in Lake Havasu, AZ.

The course is great, get ready for some intense and exhaustive training. I am using N735GH which is Tom C.'s 260SE and below you can see the six configurations me and my instructor came up with.

I put about 3 – 5 hours a day on N735GH.

Tom has been nice enough to play safety pilot for me while practicing some approaches in the Phoenix area. That was a big part of my success with the PIC course. On the first day I was on day 3 in my instructor’s eyes, this really helped speed things along and let the instructor focus on enhancing my skills and preparing me for my check ride.

My instructor tried to move my check ride up a few days and save me some money but it just couldn’t work out, so I am going to use the full 10 days. (Getting experience and instruction is everything to a new instrument pilot, and the PIC instructors are seasoned professionals that know the system and love to teach)

Get the most out of the actual time in your airplane, study and complete your lessons in the course book, study the approaches you will be doing and fly the simulator. (See if your PIC instructor can hook you up with the Elite simulator, the old big aircraft panel simulator kinda sucks, no fun, not real at all)

Good luck with your training, you won’t believe how much better you fly at about the 3rd or 4th day.

20" & 2450 RPM seems to be a good start for entry into steep turns, just get established on a heading and allow the plane to settle in.
