View Full Version : Landings requiring tail winds Technique?

In the last couple of weeks, have had to make landings with tail winds. In Louisville, KY. VOR approach to LOU 24, broke out just above minimums and was immediately cleared to land on 24 with a 15 G 20K quartering tail wind. Had full flaps and on touch down, the tail lifted...came back in with some power lifting the nose clearing prop (saving prop) set back down around 39K tail lifted again and finally got everything settled w/o any damage. Cirling minimum was 1060' -1mi. I should have requested circling for 6 but just had never had a "cleared to land 24" with a tail wind. It was night and break out was very near minimums. The very next landing via ILS remote airstrip, night, w tower closed, did the night circling about 100 ft. above min. circling with same wind and I gues same Low Pressure 25K + some gust...great landing into wind. Next landing home field with absolutely no room for a tail lift or a bounce. On touch down, I simply dumped the flaps. The tail stayed down as if "nailed down.".....a necessary go around would have been "not good but possible" with 20 deg. in a 3 or 4 sec. period. IS THIS THE BEST WAY to keep the tail down. Holding down pressure on the nose gear and thus the tail feathers seems totally bad considering the small clearance of the prop? Levon

Slightly Off topic, But how much extra clearance Would a three blade on an IO-550 give? What is the prop Diameter on the IO-470 in the 260se?

What's Your Technique?

My usual technique is to avoid them! I have not encountered a situation in which I needed to land with a serious tailwind. The maximum I've done was about 10 kt landing out of an ILS in 300-400 foot ceilings (below circling minimums). It did not require any special technique, although I used conventional wind-compensating control inputs after slowing to taxi speed.

So far it seems, drop the flaps on touch down in my testing. My runway is uphill on 27 with a right turn after 750 ft. of about 30 degress so up hill landing with down hill departures. The turn to the left on 09 is really quiet nice since little or no rudder is required and I believe shortens the take off since the rudder is not "holding anything" against the "P-Factor." Someday, I'm going to measure the 230HP departure distance. Levon

I was just told that "Flexjets" do not allow any landings with a tail wind greater than 10K. Good rule. Levon

Am I the only guy with a land one way (27) depart (09) airport? I really wanted to hear about your techniques. Also just wanted to add that the "necessary" tail wind landing under what I consider extreme conditions at Bowman Field 20K gusting to 26K "cleared for I believe 24 was due to the departure paths of Standiford Field. Circling approaches could not be safely conducted except, in my opinion with my XSTOL and Wonderful Canard but I decided to not upset the tower guys. I believe we were about 100 to 200 ft above the minimum. Levon
