View Full Version : 182 W & B spreadsheet?

Does anyone have or know where I can find a W&B spreadsheet appropriate for the 182P and/or Q? It would be nice if it also automatically plotted out a weight vs. CG graph with "dots" for the beginning and end of a flight.

Ask and it shall be answered...
Attached Excel sheet (attached as a ZIP) was ripped off from somebody else (who did an excellent job) and slightly modified to match my plane registration numbers and so forth. I have confirmed it matches POH information for my Q model which, I believe, is unchanged for the P.
It computes departure and landing W&B and graphs each within the CG envelope Cessna includes in the POH.
I showed this at my IFR checkride and pretty much got a pass on the X-country part of the oral...
Enjoy.

The really interesting thing about this spreadsheet is it shows how difficult it is to overload (or get out of CG balance) a 182. I'm really spoiled.
I have had to burn off fuel when carrying four big fellas but seldom in any other cases. Even, then, given the efficiency of the IO-470, there was never a range issue. In all cases, you will want to land to "unload" well before fuel becomes an issue.
Very nice.

Good stuff..
I see you have 2 areas for the luggage , is it to take into account the weight and location of the BRS chute ?
Also I will shamelessly take this opportunity to ask the group if anyone has already developed or amended a 182 model for the Flitestar planner ?

Nope, there are two official positions for luggage in a 182Q.
I think the most aft position was called a "hat shelf" in 1970's era Cessna marketing-speak.
Limited to 50lbs, BTW.

Thanks for the info, so that means that a new weight sheet must be compiled after the BRS is fitted.
By the way, just saw the SB coming for BRS installs in the C172 and C182, same job as on the Cirrus following the recent mishap in Australia. It's being done on my SR22 right now. Cirrus insisted that the job should be done by a specially trained engineer only. Hope it will be an easier job on the 182.

This is great Norm--thanks very much.
I ran a couple of scenarios using your airplane. With myself as pilot and flightbag in the front seats, 74 gallons instead of your 88, 390 lb of PAX in the back--when would I ever have that?--and 60/20 lb baggage I would still be comfortably inside the aft CG.
What an amazing airplane!

No, this is a generic spreadsheet for a Q (and, I think, P) model.
The chute is treated like baggage like any other kind.
So, you start with the weight of the chute in "Baggage Area 1" then add whatever else for your final Baggage Area 1 number.
I didn't add the chute in to the calculations. In other words, you don't need to modify the sheet to "remove" the chute if your plane doesn't have one. I realize that the spreadsheet, as uploaded, included some number less than 85 lbs in the Baggage Area 1 field, but that was just an oversight.

Norman,
I would have thought that the BRS install in the 182 being rather permanent would require the owner to have the aircraft weighed and a new W&B sheet computed ? It's a big change of empty weight.

What's the password to unprotect the empty weight and empty CG cells? I want to adapt this nice spreadsheet for 812PL.
Thanks in advance.

Kevin,
I should have expected this from a biotech guy!
Come on, try "password"...

Ah well, we biotech guys aren't as dumb as we look. Really. :p
The numbers on my plane are 1945 lb empty weight and 37.39" CG. This includes the BRS. I plotted out several "extreme" W&B scenarios as "boundary conditions" for future reference:
#1: Self & 300 lb "copilot" in front; usual 15 lb of aircraft accessories in baggage
#2: Self in front; 201 lb rear seat PAX; maximum legal baggage weights in baggage compartment positions
#3: Self in front; 350 lb rear seat PAX; 50 lb far aft baggage
In #1 I was still at least 0.5" inside the forward CG limit with full fuel; the margin improved as fuel burned off.
For #2, I was still almost three inches inside the aft limit!
For #3, I was four inches inside the aft limit.
It really is pretty much impossible to load this plane out of CG limits. Cessna really got it right with the 182.
