The next 260se fly-in will be May 1-4, 2008 at Sedona Arizona (SEZ). Katmai, 260se/stol, 230se/stol, Bushmaster, Super Skylane, and Wren aircraft are welcome, as is anyone with an interest in these planes and a desire to enjoy good fellowship and hangar flying with nice folks in beautiful surroundings. Owners of other aircraft: don’t worry, we won’t make too much fun of how much runway you use or your shallow climb gradients! The host FBO is

Lodging is plentiful in Sedona and immediate surroundings. Last time many attendees stayed at Sky Ranch Lodge, (http://www.skyranchlodge.com) an easy walk from the ramp. There is also a fine restaurant right on the field serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner: Sedona Airport Restaurant (http://www.sedonaairportrestaurant.com/). The Sedona area offers many attractions for family members for whom several days of nonstop flying and airplane talk may wear a bit thin: sightseeing, jeep or horseback tours, scorched-earth shopping, golf, and many other things.
As in previous years the "schedule" will be loose and informal. I'll look into a fly-out for Friday or Saturday, possibly to Monument Valley or some other suitably attractive/interesting location. In addition, as before Todd can likely be persuaded to fly some dual with owners who want to brush up on their 260se/stol skills.
Please RSVP or address questions to me by personal message through this forum or at n812kt2002@yyy.xxx, where yyy = yahoo and xxx = com. I look forward to another terrific gathering and to meeting you all again. ;)
Early next year I will communicate this to AOPA, CPA and CFA to see if we can get additional interest.

Made my Sky Ranch Lodge reservations this morning--if you want to stay there I'd suggest doing the same relatively soon, as even now not all room choices are available.

Entertaining suggestions for a fly-out activity for Saturday morning. Possible examples:
Monument Valley for brunch (~1.5 hr each way IIRC, spectacular scenery, good food with a Navajo twist, runway now fully paved).
Farmington for lunch (~2 hr each way, very good scenery enroute, good Mexican food)
Payson for breakfast (<0.5 hr each way, well-reputed breakfast, fly-in community, Mogollon Rim scenery)
Scottsdale for brunch (<1 hr each way, very good food, OK scenery)
Southern Utah scenery tour (morning, before turbulence kicks in; ~4 hr total, multiple easy dirt strip and/or paved strip opportunities, eye-popping, not-to-be-missed scenery, launch at or before sunrise, back by lunchtime, route and landing strip guidance from Todd Peterson & Bill Roberts).
Please express your preferences and/or make additional suggestions here or contact me directly as described in the top post of this thread. :)

I would say Monument Valley or Payson. I live in Southern Utah and see it all the time! ;) Scottsdale isn't fun either. You'll be #52 for takeoff when you go to leave.

Friday evening (May 2), 6:30 pm. Dinner at Sedona Airport Restaurant. We have our own room reserved (my name), can accommodate up to 18 people. If Todd and Jo are there--ya never know about Kansas weather--we'll prevail upon Todd to give a brief State of the Katmai Address with some time for Q&A.
Saturday morning fly-out (May 3): Marble Canyon, L41. (http://www.airnav.com/airport/L41) Marble Canyon Lodge for brunch. Trading Post, several lookout spots along the canyon rim for good scenery within a few minutes walk. You'll need the Grand Canyon Special Use Airspace chart. Plan to depart ~9:00 am. Runway is paved but rough in spots, narrow at ~35 feet, but plenty long at 3700+ feet (a Cirrus group flew in there and there was no damage ;)). You may want to bring chocks. Weather-dependent of course, e.g. a rip-roaring crosswind probably would not be recommended.
Thursday and Saturday evening dinners TBA "on the fly" by those who have already arrived (Thurs.) or are still there (Sat.).

Kevin,
I went to Marble Canyon a year ago with a bunch of Cirrus guys and they landed fine. So a Katmai or 260se will be no problem. As for breakfast there, we didn't call ahead and the restaurant was closed. I don't know if it is closed for good, but you probably ought to check and make some arrangements. We ended up getting back in our planes and heading over to Page. I will try to meet you guys over there on Saturday if it is possible. I will have to miss the Friday dinner. I do plan on going over Friday morning and doing some flying with whomever wants to go play. I would also like to go hit some dirt strips after the Saturday morning breakfast if anyone is interested....

I did call before posting the announcement; the restaurant will be open May 3. Thanks for the heads-up!
If anyone wants to play on dirt strips, perhaps we should do the L41 visit earlier (launch 8:00 am?). As most of you know, the flying gets turbulent after mid-day in that part of the world and the wind can come up too. :)

...at least coming from the west into Sedona; possible southwest US "monsoon" action on Sunday May 4 with isolated T-storms, not atypical for late spring into summer. I'm sure the XM WX on the GPSMAP496 will be able to point them out (not to mention my Mark IV eyeballs).
I did a little fuel price research (http://www.100LL.com) and came up with the following:
Sedona $5.07
Cottonwood (KP52) $4.67 (call in advance to verify availability)
Payson (KPAN) $4.89
Glendale (KGEU) $4.72
Holbrook (KP14) $4.30
Winslow (KINW) $4.97
St. Johns Industrial (KSJN) $3.95 (!!)
Kingman (KIGM) $4.69
Several Phoenix area airports $4.35 - $4.80
I'll be arriving mid-late morning Friday; babysitting fell through for Thursday night so I need to stay here to look after the kid while Senior Management attends to a commitment of hers. :o I'll depart PAO at zero dark thirty Friday morning for what should be about a 4 hr flight if I can do it nonstop.
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up the weather is not looking very good for us to make the Sedona fly in. The winds are forecast to be gusting over forty through Friday in advance of an approaching front. Jay will be arriving Wednesday to pick up his beautiful new King Katmai and he will need a check out before departure. Needless to say a checkout will be impossible with this kind of wind so we are going to have to wait until it subsides a little. If we can get out of here on Friday we will still head out but at this point it doesn't look good. I will keep you posted.

I planned to launch on Thursday, looked like 13 hours in flight before the head wind component of 50 kts came into play. Looked forward to seeing my brothers new home at KPAN as well as catching up with everyone. 812KT will most likely stay on the East coast this weekend. How about a fly in at Kitty Hawk NC for the East coast folks!! I do still plan on getting out to Payson the next month or so, might even stop in at Eldorado for fuel.

Come on Todd! A little wind never hurt anyone.:D That really sucks! It's kind of tough to have a fly-in without the boss?!
How hard would it be to try to reschedule? I am going to have a hard time making the Saturday morning breakfast and I can't make the Friday dinner. Now if the Saturday breakfast became a lunch.....;)

How hard would it be to try to reschedule?
That is the second such request I've received. The problem is, I don't know for sure how many folks are planning to be there and who they all are. In addition to those who have commented here, I received e-mails from 4 others in the past few months who expressed intentions to attend. Todd apparently heard from yet several additional folks, but I'm not sure who they are.
If there were a unanimous desire to cancel and reschedule, I suppose we could do it. No doubt there would be a few people who would still show up and wonder what happened.
The next feasible dates probably wouldn't be until the fall (~early October). Of course, a certain number of folks would end up with last-minute difficulties then too--based on past experience organizing these!
So, here's your chance. Comment here or contact me by e-mail (n812kt2002 then @ then yahoo then .com) by noon PST Wednesday April 30. Shortly thereafter I'll post the go-no go decision and e-mail it to all registered forum participants as well as those who contacted me personally.
Now most of you guys know me pretty well and normally some wind wouldn't be a factor. The problem is poor Jay getting a check out in his beautiful new King Katmai with the winds gusting over forty knots. The original plan was to get Jay checked out in his new bird and he would then accompany us to Sedona. This morning the local weather channel is now saying the wind gusts could be up to fifty so a checkout is all but impossible. In fact I don't even think it would be safe to open our bifold hangar doors in this wind. As of now it looks like his checkout will be moved to Friday and more like Saturday so that pretty well puts attending the convention out the window.

41M will celebrate with whomever can show!
Pauline & I flew into Pheonix Goodyear yesterday for some much needed R&R. Today we have our spa excursion & will depart for Sedona tomorrow (Thursday) morning. We are staying at the Sky Ranch Lodge and look forward to celebrating the mod; if it is safest for us to celebrate solo, so be it!
Weather to get back to Texas looks like wheels up early Saturday (won't be able to stay for lunch).

If it's still on. I am planning on leaving later today and maybe stay at Harris ranch tonight. If that doesn't happen I will leave early Thursday. I will go with whatever the flow is. No worries either way. Glen

At least, Louise, Glen and I will be there! :) Weather looks very nice coming from the west for Th and Fri, improving towards the east (NM, TX, CO, KS etc.) during the weekend.
There was no groundswell of sentiment favoring cancellation, in fact no additional owners expressed a desire to cancel or postpone as of noon today. I hope to see many of you there if you can make it.
Of course, nothing says we can't do this more than once every 2-3 years, and in more than one location!

I will look forward to meeting all that come. As a future King Katmai owner (March 09), I am interested in feedback for what I should or should not have on my plane. I am particularly interested in glass panel avionics options. Looking forward to meeting you all! I am a Sedona native so let me know if I can answer any questions for you.
Thank you,

Hello all,
I left Wed Pm from South Carolina and made it to Clarksville, Ark. then took off today and got to Borger (BGD)Tx. WInds were OK at 8500 from a ride standpoint but 30kts made a diff. in airspeed, so I stopped there. After checking the Wx, I have decided I am not a good enough pilot to take on the landings and/or winds enroute from here. I told Todd that on the phone. I will sit it out until the Wx/winds subside and then go to BRT to visit my brother near Baton Rouge.I really wanted to get there, but I am not used to that stuff back East. However, I can say that I landed with 26kts gusting to 35kts here and loved it AFTER I got downD:eek::). Fuel is $3.87/gallon!!!!
Y'all enjoy.

Hi Everyone,
After 14 months of waiting(not Todds fault), I was scheduled to pick up my new King Katmai from Todd today, get checked out and join the fly in at Sedona and show it off. Unfortunately the KS weather is not cooperating and it looks like Todd and I will be missing Sedona.
I am still headed to Wichita this week and hope to get checked out and on my way back to Oregon by this week end.
Sorry to miss everyone, but I got this bird for fun and plan on doing a lot of back country flying, so I am sure that I will be meeting everyone and making new friends.(I am a recently retired highway contractor)
I am an ex Maule, M-7 -260, driver, so I am really excited to see how the King will outperform the Maule. If any one is interested in a 1999 Maule with great avionics, go to Controller or Trade a Plane. I won't be bad mouthing the Maule too much until I get it sold!!! Not the best of times to sell a plane.
For those that make it to Sedona, have a safe and great time.
See ya next time,
Jay

Let me count the ways...;)
I know you'll be very happy with all aspects of the plane's performance. Except maybe cruise speed if you're getting those big tundra tires! OTOH it's a simple matter to swap to the standard gear with speed kit wheelpants and then you'll be a 160 KTAS airplane. Just what you'll want for that next Sedona trip.
Compared to the Maule, maybe the very best part will be that you don't have to pry the plane off your posterior after a 3 hour flight!
I'm launching for SEZ at daybreak (about 5:30 am) Friday morning, I hope to arrive before most of you guys are even out of bed and then have breakfast with you at the airport restaurant.
On Sunday I'll head for El Dorado for an annual at PPP.

Kevin & Others,
Is there any way you can make the Saturday morning flight to Marble Canyon a lunch thing instead of a breakfast thing? I don't think I'll be able to get out of here until 10:00 a.m. which would get me to Marble Canyon around 11:00 a.m. We could do lunch at 11:30-noon or something? If not, I understand of course, but I figured I would at least ask! I have a son finishing up his Eagle Scout stuff and I have to go camping with him Friday night and it will be tough to get out and in my plane my 9:00 a.m. I even flew over the camp site a couple days ago to see if there was a place to land my Katmai to shorten the trip! Too many trees...:(

Based on past history, this is not a "launch at the crack of dawn" group. I would hazard a guess that 11:00 am is probably just fine. I've PM'd you with my cell phone number.
