The Sullivan's are now part of the Peterson 260se "Clan". Todd and I made our deal and here's the 1979 C182 he's converting to a 260se "BushMaster" for us.

Hello Mike,

I just noticed that you will be joining the southern California side of the family! Welcome. What made you decide to go with the Bushmaster? Do you fly down to Baja? I've been wanting to go down there...even got all my stickers, letters, insurance etc...but haven't yet made a trip. Let me know if you plan a trip!

Sullivans:

Congratulations! The next several weeks will be trying, however, you'll have a beauty when Todd, Jo & Chris get through.

I tried to be honest with myself in deciding what I really want to do with this airplane. And, although I have family up in Central Calif my sympathetic nervous system seems to require an occasional adrenalin rush. I want to fly Baja,

I want to fly Idaho, http://www.flyidaho.com/default.asp

and I want to fly the Blue Sky country of Montana.

Since, for me, speed isn't the biggest factor, I thought the BushMaster would be best. But I did have a little doubt which Todd put to rest when he told me I could buy fairings for the over-sided BushMaster tires. So that cinched it, a 260se BushMaster it is!!! And I'll add the fairings if required. Besides that, Glen talked me into the older spring gears.

Michael, I've not flown Baja yet, mainly because San Diego flying clubs seem to frown on it, but meanwhile, I've been looking around for someone with experience down there to lead me by the hand and get me started. The Bush Pilots web site has a ton of information and they make several trips a year, as well as , a trip to Central American each January.

One thing for sure, I'm really excited, but will just have to hang in there while Todd does his thing.

Congratulations! Happy to add photos here too if you send them to me.

As far as Idaho/Montana are concerned, you'll get your chance soon. The next 260se fly-in will be there in summer 2003. Details to follow shortly!

BTW, how do you get spring steel gear on a '79? Are you going to change the maingear struts?

Kevin,

You know Todd is the magician, both with the FAA, and his mechanical ability. I'm just the customer wanting what I want.

Some updated photo's.

She will not be a Bushmaster after all. After talking with Todd a 260se makes a lot more sense. She's now at Bevan- Rabell getting a brand new avionics stack.

The waiting is agonizing!!!

Mike,
I think you made a good choice you will enjoy the extra speed. I just got back from watching Baja 1000. Flying into Mexico is a piece of cake you just have to have your paperwork in order. The most critical thing is the timing coming back into the states. I file my return date and a guess at the time when I leave. Then when you can reach San Diego FSS you amend it to ½ hour from now. Adjust the throttle till the GPS says 30 minutes and you can’t miss. San Diego FSS is very good they have their own 800 # and when you file your DVFR plan they will ask to file a return for you. I guess my point was you could fly south of the border with wheel pants.
Next, you sound like Terry Clarke saying is always clear in Portland. Thanksgiving week I flew through the Santa Ana winds only to get to the worst weather in the state in El Centro. I was going back to Mexico and that’s where I finally turned around.
If you need an adrenaline rush my friend has a 1200ft pasture runway with a 50ft obstacle right at the landing end and a 100ft drop into the river if you overshoot. Sometimes you get a little grass on your wheel pants but that’s it.

Glen,

I know about the Thanksgiving weather. For some reason there was a front moving in from the Gulf and we had more rain that weekend than we've had in 3 years. It was nice for a lazy weekend with the family but I wouldn't have wanted to fly in it. I kept seeing planes heading south but had forgotten about the Baja 1000.

Sometime I'd like to talk to you a bit more about flying into Baja. If you ever get down this way again and are headed south and need a passenger, let me know. Experiencing it once is probably better than any conversation.

Where's your friends runway, up there or down here?

Mike
